Mt. Vesuvius
Mt.Vesuvius, on the
west coast of Italy, is the only active volcano on the mainland of Europe. It
is best known because of the eruption in 79 A.D. that destroyed the city of
Pompeii. Mount Vesuvius is considered to be one of the most dangerous volcanoes
in the world.
Scientists have detected a tear in the African plate under Mt.Vesuvius. This tear allows heat from the Earth’s mantle layer (layer after the crust) to melt the rock of the African plate which builds up pressure that causes violent & explosive eruptions. Mount Vesuvius’ last serious eruption was in 1944.
Mt.Vesuvius destroyed the city of Pompeii in 79 A.D. The site is a well-preserved snapshot of life in 79 A.D. in Rome since the whole city was buried very quickly by volcanic ash including the people.
Mt.Vesuvius is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes because underneath is a densely populated city. So many people live there because of the volcanic soil which makes it easier to grow crops.
